Top 10 Global Automotive Sales Ranking in 2025
In 2025, the global automotive industry continues to show steady growth, with Toyota Motor Corporation maintaining its leading position at over 11.3 million vehicles sold, followed by Volkswagen Group and Hyundai Motor Group in second and third place respectively.

Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai Motor Company, and General Motors continue to hold the top four positions.
Driven by an 11% year-on-year growth in the second half of last year, Stellantis ranked fifth globally with sales exceeding 5.4 million units.
Among Chinese automakers, BYD, SAIC Motor, Geely Holding Group, and Dongfeng Nissan also made the list.

First, Chinese automakers showed strong momentum: BYD rose to sixth despite short-term fluctuations, while SAIC Motor and Geely Holding Group improved significantly thanks to successful transformation.
Second, the global Top 10 reveals growing divergence among Japanese brands: Toyota remains dominant, while Honda and Nissan continue to perform steadily.
Industry analysts note that, unlike market value rankings driven by profitability and growth expectations, sales rankings reflect real-time market strength—covering product competitiveness, brand influence, user reputation, strategy effectiveness, and current consumer demand trends.
The rapid rise of China's automotive market position, along with its strong expansion in overseas markets, has become a key driver behind the changes in global rankings.
According to Cui Dongshu, China's global market share rebounded to around40% in November 2025and remained at a solid37% in December. For the full year, China's share increased from34.2% in 2024 to 35.6% in 2025, representing a1.4 percentage point year-on-year gain, highlighting the continuous growth of China's global automotive presence.
As a leading Chinese automaker, BYD delivered a fluctuating yet upward sales trajectory in 2025. Despite slower growth in its plug-in hybrid segment, BYD maintained its industry-leading position with4.602 million units sold. Among them, pure electric vehicle sales reached2.2567 million units, up27.86% year-on-year, surpassing Tesla for the first time to become the global EV sales leader.
Meanwhile, SAIC Motor and Geely Holding Group outperformed Ford and Honda in the rankings. Notably, Geely achieved five consecutive years of sales growth, exceeding4 million units annually for the first time.
In terms of international expansion, BYD's overseas sales surpassed1.05 million units in 2025, marking a145% year-on-year increase. SAIC Motor also recorded1.071 million overseas sales, up3.1% year-on-year, further reinforcing the global competitiveness of Chinese automakers.
According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, China’s automobile production and sales reached34.531 million unitsand34.40 million unitsrespectively in 2025, representing year-on-year growth of10.4%and9.4%. Both figures hit record highs, with China rankingNo.1 globally for 17 consecutive years.
New energy vehicle (NEV) production and sales exceeded16 million units, with NEVs accounting forover 50% of new vehicle sales in the domestic market.
Automobile exports surpassed7 million units, ranking first in the world. Among them, NEV exports reached2.615 million units, marking a100% year-on-year increase.
During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s auto production and sales maintained a scale ofover 30 million units for three consecutive years, while industry revenue exceededRMB 10 trillion.
In 2025, Chinese-brand passenger vehicles accounted fornearly 70% of total sales, up4.3 percentage points year-on-year, further strengthening the position of domestic brands in the market.
“For Volkswagen Group, for Germany, and for the entire European industrial sector, China is not only a sales market, but also a source of innovation, a technology partner, and a key pillar of the global value creation system,” said Oliver Blume, Global CEO of Volkswagen Group, during his visit to China with the German Chancellor on February 25.
“In areas such as electric mobility, software, artificial intelligence, and battery technology, China is advancing at a globally leading pace, setting the rhythm of development and shaping industry standards.”
