Why Choose Electric Vehicle? Here’s What Sets It Apart from Traditional Cars

Jul 03,2025

Definition of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs):
NEVs refer to vehicles powered by unconventional automotive fuels (or conventional fuels combined with advanced onboard powertrains), integrating sophisticated propulsion control and drive technologies. These vehicles embody advanced technical principles, innovative structures, and new technologies. NEVs primarily include Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs), and other emerging types.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs):
BEVs utilize a single battery pack as the sole energy storage system. The battery supplies electrical energy to the electric motor, which drives the vehicle.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs):
HEVs feature a drivetrain composed of two or more power sources that can operate independently or in combination. Depending on component arrangement and control strategies, HEVs exist in multiple configurations, providing power from either single or multiple drive systems based on driving conditions.

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs):
FCEVs generate electrical energy via electrochemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell stack, using this electricity as the main propulsion source. Essentially, FCEVs are a variant of BEVs, differing primarily in the energy conversion principle of their power source.

Electric Vehicle Components:
Electric vehicles consist mainly of the electric drive and control system, transmission and powertrain components, and other functional devices. The electric drive and control system—comprising the traction motor, energy source (battery or fuel cell), and motor controller—is the core differentiator from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Other auxiliary systems largely remain similar to ICE vehicles.

Energy and Environmental Impact:
Industry and media promotion of NEVs, especially BEVs, focuses on energy saving and environmental benefits. BEVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, presenting environmental advantages at the vehicle level. However, where electricity generation relies heavily on fossil fuels such as coal, the net environmental benefit is diminished. Currently, NEVs in such regions do not significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption compared to traditional ICE vehicles. The long-term environmental significance lies in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and potentially easing energy crises as cleaner power sources (wind, hydro, nuclear, solar) become more widespread, enabling NEVs to achieve true sustainability.

Cost of Ownership:
For consumers, the emphasis is often on purchase price and operational costs rather than environmental benefits alone. Despite government subsidies, NEVs generally have higher upfront costs than equivalent ICE models, granting ICE vehicles an edge in purchase affordability. Conversely, NEVs—particularly BEVs—offer lower running costs, including reduced energy and maintenance expenses.

Range and Usage:
A major criticism of BEVs is limited driving range. Traditional ICE vehicles can commonly travel 600+ km per tank, whereas typical BEVs range around 300 km, with top models slightly exceeding 400 km. Additionally, refueling ICE vehicles takes minutes, while recharging BEVs requires tens of minutes to hours depending on charger type, impacting convenience.

Driving Performance:
NEVs, including BEVs, generally deliver strong acceleration performance, often outperforming ICE counterparts in 0-100 km/h times. Furthermore, electric propulsion offers superior quietness and ride comfort, representing key advantages in driving experience.
