I.Compact Family SUV Practicality Review: Real-World Daily Use Test

In the Chinese automotive market, the compact SUV segment remains one of the most fiercely contested battlegrounds. Thanks to their competitive pricing and versatile space, these vehicles have become a top choice for young families.

In this edition of our "Daily Utility Test," we have selected four distinct contenders for a comprehensive head-to-head comparison:

  • Neta X: The tech-forward, all-electric compact SUV from Hozon Auto.
  • Kia Seltos: A dependable, gasoline-powered compact SUV staple.
  • Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER: The innovative "gasoline-generated, electric-driven" hybrid SUV featuring dual-motor e-4ORCE technology.
  • smart #3: The premium, all-electric compact SUV-coupe with a sporty edge.

From the perspective of real-world usability, we will evaluate their overall practical performance to see which model truly stands out as the superior choice for everyday life.

II. USB Ports and Power Supply Comparison

Regarding charging connectivity, all four models feature USB ports in both the front and rear rows, meeting basic daily requirements. The Neta X delivers the best overall performance, offering four USB ports with both USB Type-A and Type-C specifications available in each row. Furthermore, it is equipped with two 12V power outlets.

In contrast, the Kia Seltos features only three USB ports and a single 12V outlet, resulting in lower practicality scores compared to the other three contenders.

III. Interior Storage Space Evaluation

In our interior storage practicality test, we focus exclusively on accessible, open storage spaces in the front row, excluding the glovebox and the center console box. The test assesses storage capacity and convenience by attempting to place a set of standard personal items simultaneously across various compartments. Testing items include:

  • Standard water bottles
  • Large-screen smartphones
  • Lipsticks, sunglasses, and umbrellas
  • Handbags and tissue boxes

3.1 Test Results and Findings

The Nissan X-Trail e-POWER and smart #3 demonstrated superior organization, comfortably accommodating all test items with well-defined storage layouts. Conversely, the Kia Seltos lagged behind with only 13 front-row storage slots. Its layout is primarily suited for small items like smartphones and lipsticks, showing overall weaker performance in high-volume storage.

3.2 Cup Holder Performance

The smart #3 stands out with twin cup holders in both the front and rear rows, all equipped with anti-slip limiters (retaining clips) for added stability. The Kia Seltos, however, only provides front cup holders and lacks a limiting structure, making it the least convenient option in this category.

IV. Trunk Capacity and Cargo Space Comparison

In terms of trunk performance, all four models feature a relatively flat load floor, ensuring ease of loading. Additionally, the rear seats in each vehicle support split-folding, providing essential flexibility for cargo space expansion.

According to our real-world loading tests, the Dongfeng Nissan X-Trail e-POWER emerged as the top performer, with all measured dimensions exceeding the segment’s average. In contrast, the smart #3 underperformed in several key metrics compared to its peers, resulting in a trunk practicality rating that sits slightly below the rest of the group.

V. Interior Visibility and Blind Spot Comparison

In this safety evaluation phase, we measured and compared the visibility ranges essential for daily driving. During testing, all seats were adjusted to their lowest positions. Please note that test data may vary from actual driving experiences and is intended for reference purposes only.

5.1 Front Visibility Test

For the front blind spot test, we used a 70cm-tall traffic cone as a benchmark. The distance was measured from the front of the vehicle to the point where the top of the cone became visible from the driver’s seat. A lower numerical value indicates a smaller blind spot and superior forward visibility.

The results show that all four models outperformed the segment average. The smart #3 was particularly impressive, demonstrating the most effective control over front-end blind spots.

5.2 Rear Visibility Performance

In terms of rear-view visibility, the Kia Seltos and smart #3 emerged as leaders, while the Nissan X-Trail e-POWER also maintained a high-tier position above the class average. The Neta X lagged behind the group, with its results falling below the standard for its segment.

5.3 Side Mirror Field of View (FOV)

Regarding side-view mirror performance, the Nissan X-Trail e-POWER delivered the best results, with both left and right mirrors offering a wider-than-average field of view. Conversely, the left mirror of the Neta X and the right mirror of the smart #3 both fell below the segment average. These limitations result in larger blind spots, requiring extra caution during lane changes.

VI. Parking Assistance and Maneuverability Comparison

In our Parking Assistance evaluation, we measure the "continuous beep" distance of the parking sensors. A distance closest to 0.25m is considered ideal, as it best aligns with standard daily driving habits.

6.1 Front and Rear Parking Sensors

For Front Parking Sensors, the Neta X demonstrated the strongest detection capability, with a maximum range of 1.2m and a continuous beep threshold at exactly 0.25m, perfectly matching our benchmark. In contrast, the Kia Seltos showed weaker performance, with a significant discrepancy from the ideal test value.

Regarding Rear Parking Sensors, the Nissan X-Trail e-POWER excelled with a maximum detection range of 1.4m, indicating superior radar power. The other three models fell below the segment average. During the continuous beep stage, the Kia Seltos again deviated notably from the benchmark, requiring extra caution during reverse maneuvers.

6.2 Camera Systems and Imaging

All four models are equipped with a 360° Panoramic Camera system. However, the Kia Seltos and smart #3 offer a competitive edge by supporting multi-angle view switching, providing superior overall utility and situational awareness.

6.3 Steering Flexibility (Turning Radius)

To assess convenience during U-turns and tight cornering, we measured the minimum road width required for a stationary U-turn.

  • Kia Seltos: 10.0m
  • Nissan X-Trail e-POWER: 10.2m
  • smart #3: 10.2m
  • Neta X: 11.0m

While the Kia Seltos performed well, the remaining three models did not meet the average standards for the compact SUV segment in this specific metric.

VII. Final Verdict: Conclusion and Buying Advice

In summary, all four compact SUVs in this comparison demonstrate a high level of daily practicality, though each model presents its own set of trade-offs across our rigorous testing categories.

  • Visibility & Safety: The Neta X and Nissan X-Trail e-POWER exhibited relatively larger rear-view blind spots. Meanwhile, the smart #3 faces limitations with its right-side mirror's field of view, which may require additional driver attention.
  • Storage & Assistance: The Kia Seltos showed room for improvement in terms of front-row storage quantity and the power of its front parking sensors.
  • Overall Performance: Despite these specific nuances, all four contenders deliver a well-rounded experience capable of meeting the demands of daily commuting.

Conclusion: Each model offers distinct strengths and weaknesses. Prospective buyers should weigh these practical test results against their specific driving scenarios and personal preferences to find the ideal match.
